Slipknot Projects

I've made two projects so far inspired by this book and have a couple more in mind - but more ideas than time!

One is a cell sock for Jane to keep her phone in and clip to her belt loop so she doesn't lose it.

The other is a "Knot a Scarf"
( slipknot - get it?) I knit this with some beautiful ribbon yarn that I got from Fiahdnat in the Trick or Treat swap.

Winners, We Have Winners!

First - for this weeks riddle. The correct answers was: Why didn't Hall believe Long? If he had been without water for three days he would be dehydrated and would not be able to wipe perspiration from his brow. There was only one correct answer this time, and it was from Barbara (with a little help from her cat). Your prize will be on it's way to you next week.

Second - for the Bone Harvest project contest. The winner is....Sheila for her fingerless mitts.

Please e-mail you address to me (grammieknits@yahoo.com)

I have to say that I enjoyed some of your ideas that never happened like the
mittenless fingers (I think your DH should join the group Barbara!) and the lemonade socks (some lemonade koolade will be on its way to you Penny!)

Trick or Treat Package

On Friday, I received a Trick or Treat package from Mary Aman! It is a great package

and this photo doesn't do it justice.

Two skeins of Lion Brand, Fancy Fur in brilliant blue

A pattern for a fuzzy neck gaiter

A candle and candle holder

Grapefruit foot massage cream

and, finally, a magnetic notepad.

Thanks Mary. It is a great package.

Bone Harvest Project

I think Penny took the wiser course of action by deciding not to knit a birthday cake. But then again, hers probably would have turned out better than mine. I give you a mis-shappen German chocolae cake.

I had told my husband about the book one day over lunch and that it seemed that several folks were knitting fingerless mitts. He said, "I think you should knit mittless fingers." This is what I have to live with every day! Yeah, it is worth it!

BONE HARVEST PROJECT

I am putting in a photo of my whoduknit Bone Harvest project. At first I thought of knitting a birthday cake and then knitting a pair of toddler socks dyed with yellow Kool-Aid (Lemonade Socks). I looked all over but couldn't find any yellow Kool-Aid. BUT my photo is also of fingerless mitts (faternal twins not identical) since that is what the majority seem to be doing. Mine have a hole for the thumb and have some lightweight metal coins dangling off the end of the mitts on each hand. I have decided on what I will do for Slipknot also.

Rescue or Murder?

Solve the Riddle and win a prize (whoduknit member only!) E-mail your answer to me - grammieknits@yahoo.com - by Saturday, Oct. 20.

"Thank heaven you saw me!" exclaimed Ted Long as he feebly helped make fast his battered yawl to Dr. Hall's chartered fishing boat.
Hall reached over the side and assisted the bedraggled yachtsman aboard.
Long staggered into the shade of the cabin and sagged upon a berth. He removed his cap to wipe the perspiration from his brow, revealing a bald, freckled head.
"Drink this," said Hall, holding out a cup of water.
Long gulped it frantically, asked for a second, and when he had downed it, told of his ordeal.
"Bill Smith and I were sailing for Bimini when the storm hit us. The sails, rudder, and radio went in the first five minutes. We barely managed to keep afloat.
"We drifted five days, lost. Three days ago our fresh water supply gave out. Bill went crazy with the heat and thirst. He started to drink the ocean water. I tried to restrain him -- I hit him. He -- he struck his head against the starboard rail. He's dead! It's my fault!"
Hall climbed into Long's disheveled yacht. In the little cabin he found Bill Smith laid out on his back, dead. The criminologist studied the bruise on Smith's jaw and the one at the base of his skull.
Back on the fishing boat, he warned Long grimly, "You're going to have to tell the police a better tale than the one you told me!"
Why didn't Hall believe Long?

Riddle Solution and Winner

Thanks for playing! The correct answer was......

Mandy killed her uncle. It was afternoon when Carrie looked out the bay window and saw the sunset, so the window must have been facing the west. However, Mandy claimed to have seen the sunrise through that same window, but the sun rises in the east. Carrie learned from a distraught Mandy that they had argued recently, and she had come to settle their dispute, although Steven had already disowned her and refused to re-include her in his will, so, in a fit of anger, Mandy shot him with a revolver hidden in a kitchen cabinet for safety precautions. Her uncle had also fancied a drink and was on his way down to the kitchen when she was taking her glass of water back upstairs.
There were 12 correct answers, and the winner of the drawing is.....

Treats from Ireland!

I received my fall 'trick or treat' package from Fiadhnat today! And I really got treated! Just look at all of my goodies.

The book is The Fires and the Shadows - which looks very spooky - perfect for Halloween reading. It is really of treasury of short stories from some of the best mystery writers, Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, among others. I can't wait to read it. The other book was actually her 'trick'. It's a book of short stories by Irish women writers with a portion of the profits going to the aid of Tsunami victims. Another real treasury of famous authors including one of my favorites - Maeve Binchy. The trick is that about half way through the book, there are about 140 upside down pages! See that chocolate? One of those candy bars is gone already (and I haven't even had my dinner yet). The little magnetic recipe book is so cute - and actually has some great recipes in it that I am hoping my DH will 'treat' me to. The little lamb is actually soap, which I really don't want to melt down in the shower because he smells so good. Right now he is sitting next to my computer. And the yarn! It is a gorgeous ribbon yarn called Organza by Sirdar in a beautiful golden fall color. She also included a pattern for a "Knot a Scarf" which is kind of a necklace scarf. And...best of all, she included a picture of herself wearing a scarf she had made from the pattern. I'm not posting that picture without her permission, but I can tell you she has red hair (are you surprised) and is holding two beautiful red-headed children in the pictures! (Actually, I think we are related VBG) Thank you so much Fiadhnat - I love my trick or treat package!

And three more squares

I also received three squares for our Charity Blanket from Fiadhnat along with my swap package. Aren't they beautiful? Look at the one with the miniature sweater (jumper) knitted into it! She says the patterns are from the book "the Great American Aaron Afghan". If you have no idea what I am talking about, last March we read a book that took place in Ireland, and we decided to make a charity blanket as a group project for the book. I still don't really have enough squares to put together into an afghan, so if any of you new members would like to contribute to the blanket, you are more than welcome. You can find the details here, and photos of the squares I have received in the photo section on the yahoo group, or in posts labeled 'whoduknit charity blanket' here on the blog.
Thanks Fiadhnat!

Whoduknit Riddle

Solve the riddle and win a Halloween Mystery Package. E-mail the answers to me at grammieknits@yahoo.com by Sunday, October 7.

Carrie Marshall had recently joined the Riverside police force, and on the first day of her job, she was sent out to investigate a new homicide case. The murder involved a wealthy bachelor, Steven Andrews, who lived in an expensive, grand oceanside mansion. At the time of the murder, there had been five other people in the house: the cook, the maid, two friends, and his niece. Both the cook and maid had rooms in the mansion, and the three guests had all stayed overnight. When Carrie got to the mansion, the five suspects had all been lined up in front of a large bay window. It was mid-afternoon, and through the window, Carrie could see the beautiful sunset. Her partner, Lieutenant Linda Newton, who had arrived an hour earlier, sketched out the details for Carrie. All the suspects had agreed that Steven Andrews had been found murdered in the morning, shortly before six-thirty am, but he had been alive a few minutes past midnight, when they all headed to bed. Nobody had heard anything during the night. Mandy Andrews, the niece, had come down to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and on her way back upstairs, had passed the bay window, where she saw her uncle's dead body.Carrie decides to begin interrogating the suspects as the lieutenant and two other officers go off to look for more evidence and clues. The suspects give the following testimonies:Maid: "I retired to my room shortly past eleven last night, after cleaning the dining room where Mr. Andrews dined with his guests, and helped the cook put away the leftover food. I was reading a novel until about twelve-twenty, and heard occasional laughter and talk, although I couldn't make out the words. This morning, I heard a scream, which was from Miss Mandy, so I rushed down with the cook and his two friends. Mr. Andrews was laying dead in front of that window. The lieutenant moved his body about fifteen minutes before you arrived, but there was blood on the side of the head, from a gunshot, maybe. I didn't hear anything, but whoever did it could have used a muffler. I'm innocent, though."Cook: "It's like the maid says. She was cleaning the dining room while I tidied up the kitchen, and we both stored the leftovers in the refrigerator and talked for a few minutes about his guests. I went upstairs and to my room about the same time she did, but fell asleep after I took a shower and brushed my teeth. That was about eleven-thirty maybe, and I slept soundly until this morning, when a scream woke me. I rushed downstairs with the others, and there was the body. I tell you, I didn't do it. I've been with Mr. Andrews for eight years, and he knows he can trust me."Mandy: "I was up until midnight with my uncle and his friends, talking and joking around. I fell asleep at about one-fifteen, but woke at six-twenty-four, and was thirsty, so I went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water. On the way back, I passed by the bay window, the one behind us, and I could see the beautiful sunrise outside, but, sadly, my uncle was sprawled on the ground, with a huge bloody wound on the side of his head. I screamed and the others were here in just one or two minutes.""That's enough," Carrie said abruptly, before the two friends of Mr. Andrews can say anything. "I know who did it. Lieutenant! We have our murderer!"All five suspects, and the lieutenant and her two men, who came into the room at her call, looked at Carrie. Who murdered Steven Andrews, and how did Carrie know?

from Jane

I couldn't post these on Jane's blog so I thought I would post them here . . . to share with all of you how incredibly fantastic Jane is. I have to admit that I have been negligent in not posting earlier the pics of what I received from Jane . . . sorry Jane . . . the stitch markers were won from Jane's contest. These are beautiful and this pic just doesn't do them justice.

These roses are from the Pay it Forward challenge that Jane posted about. Again, this pic just doesn't do this justice. The color of the roses is doctor and very rich. I have these on my desk and I have had so many people comment on them. However, not only are they beautiful, they are functional as the stems are knitting needles!

Thanks so much Jane. You are the best.

Finally a picture!

Before the autumn swap gets underway, I wanted to be sure to post pictures, finally, of the lovely things Penny sent to me for the summer swap. She did a great job of finding wonderful bargains, and it felt like Christmas or my birthday, or something when I got the box. Here are all of them together. Don't they look enticing? I loved it how she left prices on them so I could see how wisely she spent her $10.

On the left are several wonderful kinds of yarn, and I can think of lovely things to knit with them. In the center you can see the three mystery books. Patricia Wentworth is an author I have never read, but am greatly looking forward to reading. And the Jill Churchill book is one I've heard about but never been able to get, so I'm thrilled! Lovely hand-crocheted doilies are there, very colorful and pretty. I love them! There is a children's knitted patterns book on the right, sort of hiding a beautiful tote that will be perfect to hold the projects in progress. There is also a Ronco loom to make flowers, which should be lots of fun to try, and a cute notebook with Nancy Drew on the cover. And finally, there is a tube of hand cream (one of my favorite kinds, actually). Thank you so much, Penny!

Thank You Joyce!

I received my summer swap package from Joyce today - and what a bargain shopper she is! When I opened the box the first thing I found was this wool sweater.

Joyce suggested that I might want to felt it and make a bag out of it. It's a beautiful sweater - but wouldn't it make a beautiful felted bag!

Next was this tote bag - nice and big and room with a big zippered pocket in the front. What a great project bag this will make!

And look inside! Two skeins of Navy wool yarn, one skein of Dazzle ribbon yarn (the two of them together would make a great felted something!) Three skeins of a cream colored yarn, and two skeins of a multi-colored yarn. Then there were some vintage knitting magazines and booklets. I just love looking through old knitting patterns - so many of them are classics that just never go out of style. And there was more! Three books - two Agatha Christie's and one Anne Perry - both authors I love and books I haven't read. Not done yet! In the pocket of the tote bag there were some raspberry chocolates (no I'm not sharing them) and an invitation to come to her house and knit and nibble on a bowl of them, and some beautiful stitch markers that her DD made, and a cute little pen to go with the notepad.

Thank you Joyce - You are a super bargain hunter and a super friend!
