Plains Crazy Project

The book Plains Crazy was a little too chaotic for me but I read the whole book. I loved the ending too.

So I saw the sock project on the blog made from maize and I just thought I'd send in my sock photo. It's not made with corn or bamboo or anything like that. I just thought these tiny socks were plain crazy! lol

Plains Crazy Project

I am posting my Plains Crazy project. Since Judy English may have to have chemo when she returns from Paris she will be needing a hat as we all know what happens when someone has chemo. So I knit her a hat with a long eyelash that looks like hair. Another new hair style for her.

Who Killed Margaret? Solution

Solution: Yup, it was the milkman. There was a newspaper on the porch but no milk bottle because the milkman knew she was dead and did not realize that the sheriff would wait so long to investigate the murder. And the winner in the random drawing this week is.....Holly! Congratulations Holly!

Lt. Dunnit is back with a new murder mystery to solve, and as usual, he needs your help!

Margaret Stove was a recluse who had been stabbed to death two days ago with the very Addie Turbo knitting needles she was using to knit her Mystery Stole. The town sheriff had received an anonymous call at 4 a.m. the day before that she had been murdered, but thought it was just another prank and confessed to Lt. Hugh Dunnit that he didn't investigate it until the next day. He told Lt. Dunnit that Margaret lived alone and never went out of the house. She spent most of her days knitting and her social life revolved around her internet knitting groups. She had been the butt of every practical joke in the book, including the death report, a dozen times.
The sheriff took Lt. Dunnit to Margaret's house and explained, as they stood on the porch that aside from a daily milk and newspaper delivery, the only visitors who saw her regularly were the grocery boy and her doctor, and both were due tomorrow. Lt. Dunnit could see why. The driveway to the house was overgrown and impassable and deliveries obviously had to be made on foot. Dunnit sat down on a rocking chair, the only object on the sagging porch except for two unopened newspapers. "Who was the last person to see Ms. Stove alive?" he asked. "Probably Kara Bella."" the sheriff said. Early on the day of Margaret's death she was driving by and noticed the old lady come out on the porch to take in her bottle of milk." Margaret Stove was supposed to have fifty thousand dollars hidden someplace. We can't find it, or any clues.
"Except for the anonymous telephone call," said Lt. Dunnit. "The murderer never figured you wouldn't investigate within the hour!"
Who did Lt. Dunnit suspect?

Lookee! Lookee!

Look what Aunt Kathy sent me for the Yard Sale Swap!
See the two Diane Mott Davidson books? Each one came with something that tied into the book...pancake mix for "Killer Pancake" and Poppyseed Muffin Mix for "The Last Supper".
And see the cook book cover? Aunt Kathy made it for me! She said that the pattern is on her blog....She sent me a lovely Grandmother bookmark with pin (and the pin has a green stone - my favorite!).

Such an awesome surprise!

Plains Crazy Clapotis

When Judy finally got to Paris she was wearing her hand-knit Clapotis, the style inspired by Paris but the colors reminiscent of the wide open spaces and blue skies of the Plains.

DEAD SLEEP PROJECT

I finally finished my Dead Sleep Project. Sleeping or dead woman, tubs. I took some artistic liberties with this one. I found a photo of my furtoddler Solara sitting in the sink. Then I asked my girlfriend to pixelate it for me. Then the big task to try to knit it. Please don't laugh when you look at the photo. I took the photo while it was being blocked on my striped chair. Maybe I will make it into a pillow. The pink blob is her nose and was knit with cotton yarn. The rest of her was knit with Cascade 220. I found some shiny silver ribbon yarn for the faucet. Solara is a tabby tortie with white. You can see from the photo the white of her belly. That part of her I knit with some fuzzy yarn. I guess I got a little crazed when I was knitting her paw by her belly which you can see from the photo doesn't look so funny. Her other paw is on the edge of the sink to the left of her head. All her paws are white and her eyes are green.
This is what I tried to knit from but sometimes I knit and didn't check what I was doing so some areas of her look funny.

Bon Voyage.....Winner!

A huge thanks to all of you who took the time to 'invite' us to your town and show us around! And another huge thanks to those of you who also took the time to take the tour and guess whose town you were in. Your names were numbered and the numbers placed in the random number generator and the winner is......Aunt Kathy!!!!
Congratulations Kathy - the souvenir gift bag will be on its way to you soon. Enjoy!
I'll keep the links on the sidebar for those of you who have not had a chance to take the tour yet. Thanks once again - I enjoyed this anniversary celebration immensely! Next time we will have to do it for real!

I hope that you are all packed, have your passports and tickets ready because we have 19 towns to visit!

While it would be great if we could all travel to each place at the same time, I'm afraid that schedules, time differences, etc. would make that just about impossible. So instead, for the rest of this month, take your time and visit each of the towns on the sideboard of this blog. Each link will take you either to a blog, a post, or a website, where you can read all about what you will be doing in that town.

Be sure to leave your host a comment on their blog, or a reply to their post to let them know how you enjoyed your visit. Then answer the questions below for a chance to win a souvenir gift bag from my town. The bag is handmade by a local artisan (that would be me LOL), and is filled with a Downeast Maine Cookbook, roving from Friends Folly Farm in Momouth, ME., Sandalwood Sage handmade soap from the Prospect Harbor Soap Co. , The Lobster Chronicles by Linda Greenlaw, a Maine author, a mini-album to put photos of your trip in, Note cards by artist Pam Britton, a miniature Portland Head Lighthouse, and a few surprise goodies.
Send your answers to me at grammieknitsatyahoodotcom by August 31 to be eligible to win.

Dead Sleep Project

My project is a soap sack and matching washcloth for Jordan and her new love (if they ever get to finish their rendevous in the shower, LOL). I still need to make the I-cord for the sack and the camera batteries went into their own dead sleep after the one pic, so no washcloth to view. I think next time I would use a solid color - although I like the way this colorway made a kind of visual ripple effect (and the colors remind me of Good & Plenty candy!), I think the eyelets on the sack would show up better on a solid. ~ Valerie K

Mystery Project recieved

I recieved a huge box in the mail today from Karen V who is either #1 an overachiever or #2 as guilt laden (which is not necessary at all!) as she says she is!
So here is what she knit for me from my yarn. Unfortunately is is about 105 degrees outside and we do not have air conditioning so I have not been able to try them on! The clapotis scarf and my very own pair of mitts!!!!!! YAY!!!! I have been wanting both - but have not taken the time to knit either one for myself!

And look at these books! Perfect timing for the lace shawls because a friend of mine recently became engaged and I really want to make something special for her and have been looking for a special shawl to make! So cant wait to look thru this book later tonight. And yes, Karen wrapped each item seperately in tissue paper and stuck a little K note on each! The books looks great - have read both authors and enjoy their writing so am looking forward to reading these!

And here is a lovely bunch of things....special salt and hot chocolate (good thing - regular chocolate would probably have melted and evaporated! Just the things I need right now - line post its to help follow patterns and some perfect sized stitch markers for sock knitting! A new Chibi set - a tin of mints which will eventually hold the markers -- a great calculator and a wonderful timer (do I really want to know how much time I spend knitting? But I can put it by my chair when I am cooking so I no longer have to say - oops! I didint hear the timer go off!!!)

And looky! My very own sock blocker key chain complete with sockie on it! Again, have used these for gifts but never made myself one!!

I have been SO WONDERFULLY spoiled - thank you so much!! And the fun thing is - Monday is my anniversary so it is fun to recieve presents this weekend! Karen, thank you very very VERY much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dead Sleep Project

I had a few ideas for this book. I thought about a felted bathtub with a needlefelted naked girl in it - yeah, right! But settled on this project which took about all of 15 minutes.
I cut out the pallet from a felted project gone wrong and then needlefelted the paint.

Dead Sleep Project

I made two items for Dead Sleep. I knitted a Pop-Tart camera case and a chocolate bunny. I know Jordan found Pop-Tarts and Twinkies for junk food, but I figured chocolate counted! More info can be found on my blog, here, and on my Ravelry project pages.

Picture, finally

Now that I have managed to a) find the proper cord and b) get back to my office, I can finally show off the beautiful scarf Mary Lynn made for me out of the skein of Claudia Hand Paint yarn I sent her for our swap. Isn't it pretty?? It's about a gajillion degrees outside today in Sacramento, but I'm looking ofrward to wearing my new scarf when the weather cools!

Yard Sale Swap

Well, blogger and the internet were temporarily allowing me to post pictures. SIGH. I received a great package from Shelly as part of the Yard Sale Swap. It is very cool and I would love to post a picture here, but I can't. Therefore, you can learn all about it by going here.

Spring Mystery Swap Package.... a little late

I am finally getting around to posting the pictures of my package from Patt. Sorry if it is late. My hubby's brother past away a week ago. Sudden, and we had to handle this.
I wanted to Thank Patt for her package. It actually cheer me up at this time.

Patt knitted me a pair of fingerless gloves and a scarf. She include a lovely skein of Cascade The Heathers, in a teal color, Jaguar colors! Some stitch markers, DPN's, measuring tape and a needle gauge. Some mints, a bracelet, and a watch key, which is now hanging on my purse. And a pattern to knit up a scarf. Everything was great. Thank you.

Dead Sleep Project

Last month someone posted a purse project that had been completed earlier but fit her P.D. James book. Well, I'm following in those footsteps this month with a dual-duty project. I always have socks on my needles and I just completed a pair. While I didn't make them specifically for Whoduknit, I think Jordan would be pleased to wear them.

The yarn is Socks that Rock Covelite. The color combination is an unusual reddish brown with purple stripes and white accents. Someone with an artistic eye (Jordan and her camera, right?) would be drawn to these colors. The yarn is mediumweight, perfect for tramping around remote locations in heavy shoes. The cable pattern makes them nice and cushy as well.

I worked out this particular cable pattern on my own, but I'm sure it can be found in a stitch dictionary somewhere. Enjoy the pretty colors! Those of you on Ravelry, more pictures are posted there (my Ravelry ID is "seamless").

Our Sneaky Fearless Leader

Jane takes the craftiness cake this week. She EMAILED me and said that my secret swap partner was trying to email me, and by chance did it end up in my spam folder. She then went on to FWD me a list of questions. That sneak....it was HER all along!

I WAS SNOOKERED. And I loved every single second of it. YOU GOT ME!

Thank you. If I EVER get to Maine, I am shopping with you. Wow. You are a bargin finder extroidaire. Holy Buckets. I can't decide what I like the most. But, the good part is that I don't have to. D, my 13 yo, has run off with the microspun saying something about how it is so soft and she wants something made of it. They both wanted the fancy popcicle kleenex...NO WAY....MINE. My oldest snagged the sour candies, and I'm left with a great pile to fondle, ohhh and ahhhh IN QUIET. Tonight I will start flipping through the mags (dangerous) and pick out what book I'm going to read next. *sigh of happiness* Who said ironing day couldn't be a pack of fun!

Thank you Jane!

Mary Lynn is great, but I am an idiot

Mary Lynn made me the most beautiful scarf out of the yarn I sent her, and I came to my office today to post a picture so all of you could see it. My home computer will not let me log into Blogger (long story), and I'm on summer break from work, so I'm not in my office very often these days. I posed the lovely scarf (Branching Out, if I'm not mistaken) with my Dolores 2008 mug and the stuffed donkey and elephant I use as props when I cover political parties in my American Government classes. V. cute. Unfortunately, I left the little cord that hooks the camera to the computer at home, so I can't post the picture (insert snarky comment about absentminded professors here). Grrrr. I will try again tomorrow, and it will be worth the wait. Mary Lynn really outdid herself, and I can't wait until the weather cools a bit and I can wear the scarf. I must also search out a cool pattern with cables, so I can use the Knitpicks harmony cable needles she sent. They're so pretty I'm tempted to use them as scarf pins!

No Noose is good news!

Solution:

Although James Brett said that he did not know where Red Hart was staying and had never been there, he knew that the door chime was coming from the back door and not the front, which an innocent person would have assumed. We had eight correct answers this week and Judy, our newest member (how's that for beginner's luck!) won the drawing! Congratulations Judy. Please choose a prize from the prize locker in the files on the Yahoo Group and send me your address. (grammieknitsatyahoodotcom).

James Brett called Lt. Hugh Dunnit in a panic. His business partner, Red Hart had been morose ever since his wife asked him to move out of the house. For the past several days he hadn't shown up at the office and no one had any idea where he was. Brett said he had just received a phone call from Hart saying he couldn't go on without her.
Two hours later Lt. Dunnit was driving to Hart's house with Brett who explained to Lt. Dunnit, "I should have visited him, but nobody knew where he was living. I got the address of the house he was renting this afternoon when he telephoned me to say he was contemplating suicide. I thought you'd better come with me and perhaps have a talk with him."
"He said it was on 252 Plymouth Lane, over the phone," went on Brett.
They found the house and Hugh Dunnit left the car first. Finding the front door ajar, he entered and switched on the lights. Five minutes later the two men found Red Hart hanging by a beam in the attic. As they stood silently staring at the body, a door chime sounded downstairs.
With Lt. Dunnit right behind him, Brett ran to the back door. There stood a teenage girl. "Mother asked me to return this bottle of milk to Mr. Hart," she said.
Lt. Dunnit took the milk, put it in the refrigerator, and then promptly read James Brett his rights and arrested him for the murder of Red Hart. What made him suspect Brett?

Summer Swap Package from Norway

I received my Summer Swap package from Annie all the way from Norway today! She sent some great yarn - Superwash sock yarn, and some cool Tutti Frutti yarn that I think would make a great scarf. Thanks Annie!

Yard Sale Swap Package Received

A binder filled with patterns all inside plastic protector sheets, what a wonderful idea.
Two mystery books to read, 3 American Indian note cards, a bookmark, a journal with a matching bookmark (little did she know I use these exact journals to write down my original patterns before I type them on the computer, I like to have backup, lol) a 2008 knitting calendar with patterns on each day and she got it for $1.00, what a great find. Some KnitPicks gloss yarn in the color Dusk, (hmm any ideas on what I can make with this, it's beautiful) and knitted felted bracelet kit... it's the neatest thing. I am going to make it for my niece Hannah, her birthday is this week and it will be my gift to her. Just perfect timing, if you ask me.

I tell you it sure looks like it's worth more then $10.00... I hope I can find as many good deals for my swap partner when I finally start looking.

Thank you so much to my secret partner... you did a great job. I am very pleased with everything. I just am in awe.

Lilli's Town

Hi I am Lilli Bilson, I live in Benton Kansas. Nothing exciting happens in Benton. But we live about 10 minutes away from Wichita. In Wichita we can visit the Exploration Place it has traveling exhibits, air craft technology and conservation exhibits. Then we can go see a movie at the Warren Theater. Kansas is such a quiet boring state. If you want to see beautiful country then a drive through the Flint Hills is the way to go.

P D James Project

I actually have 2 projects, although I'm still working on one. Since I read Shroud for a Nightingale, set in and around an English nursing students' dorm, my first (uncompleted) project was a stethoscope cover - it's basically a sleeve, about 24" long, that slips onto the tubing of the scope (you remove the head of the scope, slide it on and replace the head). Then when you place the scope around your neck (the handiest hanging spot, LOL) when not using it, your neck is protected from the tubing and vice versa. I have many that are cloth, all different fabrics, but I wanted to try it in some cotton yarn, so I started one in the round. Then I thought about this gizmo in my closet that makes I-cord, bigger in diameter than the typical French knitter, that the tubing might go through. Unfortunately, the garden finally dried out enough (barely!) for my husband to enlist me in placing the drain tile in there that he's been planning, so my first project has gone askew for the time being.
My second project (see pix), however, is nearly complete, just need to weave ends and block a bit (I had a devil of time keeping a consistent gauge - cotton yarn, bamboo needles, bad mix!). I was trying to cover double bases here, so this is a nod to the British Royals as well as another little birthday gift for my mom (who's coming here in 12 days - YIPPEE!) - she refers to herself as "The Queen" (no, she's not looney...well, not that looney - it started as a joke and has mushroomed!). It's really more of a camel color, not as orange as the pix; when I tried a flash pic the color was a little more realistic but with less definition (although it's hard to see the little bobbles on the points of the crown in any of the pix), so I left it with "natural" lighting. But now I think it may be too big, so...she can do whatever floats her boat with it, but I think it would make a great hotpad for her teapot (hmm, that's even more British!) and so I'm going to make some smaller versions as coasters!   ~  Valerie K

Who Broke the Window Solution

Solution: The note said ? (question mark) Yarnover - so he knew he should question Mark!

One summer night, Lt. Hugh Dunnit was in living room watching an old episode of Dragnet on T.V. All of a sudden a rock came crashing through his window, breaking it. Lt. Dunnit got up and looked out the window just in time to see three neighborhood kids who were brothers run around a corner. Their names were John Yarnover, Mark Yarnover and Paul Yarnover. The next day Lt. Dunnit got a note on his door that read "? Yarnover. He broke your window." Which of the three Yarnover brothers should Hugh Dunnit question about the incident?

Send your answer to me (grammieknits@yahoo.com) by midnight on Saturday, August 2.

PD James Project

I have completed my P.D. James project. I read one of her earlier books called A Mind to Murder an Adam Dalgiesh murder mystery. This is what the back of the book says since I don't want to give too much away for those who will want to read it. "A hideous scream pierces the calm of the evening psychotherapy session. The body of a woman lies sprawled in the basement of the Steen Clinic, a chisel thrust through her heart. ........Is the killer a patient or a crazed healer?" This story takes place in a psychiatric outpatient clinic in London. One of the therapies used in the clinic at the time this mystery takes place is to give LSD "to help make the patient more accessible to psychotherapy by releasing some of the more deep-seated inhibitions". After giving LSD the patient is never left alone and is watched over by a nurse. In the days of this therapy nurses wore hats so for my project I knitted and felted a nurse's hat. AND who better to model the hat than my furtoddler Solara. Sorry I had to hold her head up initially to take the photo.
Solara says I would rather wear my hat like this.

Dead Sleep Project

OK, I know I'm jumping the gun a little here, but the pictures are on my home computer, and I'm going back to San Antonio tomorrow.

I got this cute little camera for Mother's Day, and I keep it in my purse so it's always ready to take a pic of the grandkids. Since the main character in Dead Sleep is a photographer, a camera sock was the perfect project. I used leftover sock yarn. I even Made a pocket for the exta memory card and batter.

P.D. James Lap Blanket

In the book Innocent Blood Phillipa prepares to rent a partially furnished flat with her birth mother for a few months. She looks for items to spruce up the questionable but probably serviceable furniture. The pictured lace circle is just the size to cover one's lap for a little warmth, and hang over dreary furniture (including my own!) for a little color.

A disclaimer here. The circle you see took exactly one skein of a June yarn club offering, about 420 yards. I became rather enamored of my little project and I actually intend to take out the temporary crochet bind off and make it larger. I happily found a person or two willing to sell me theirs, but I don't have them yet.

WHODUKNIT Mystery KAL

Here is my mystery KAL - don't you just love it! Kathy designed it and led the KAL. If you didn't get a chance to join us, you can still get the pattern in the files on the Yahoo Group.

MY PD JAMES Projects

I read Devises and Desires

It started with a young girl leaving a roller skating dance thing (I think, lol) and she threw a shoulder bag over her shoulder as she ran to try to catch the bus. I actually made this awhile ago, but thought it fit in perfectly.

The killer/murderer was always wearing a Beret, so I decided I had to make a "Killer Beret" I crocheted this one with Patons Merino and then decided to felt it. Well it really shrunk, lol. Here is the felted version

And this is what it looked like before felting
Here also is the KAL we did this month. I didn't block it, I fully intended to before sharing the photo but do you think I can find the cloth now??? It's truly a mystery, LOL.

So there you are... nothing great but at least this time I have something to show.

Now the real challenge... finding something to knit from Dead Sleep...

Road Rage Revenge Solution

Solution: Lt. Dunnit didn't believe Annie's story because if she didn't know there was a car behind her she wouldn't have known it was a man. Everyone guessed that one There was another clue and that was that Annie did not like to drive at night. Therefore we would assume it was daylight, and of course possums only come out at night. Annie had decided to teach the driver a lesson about how dangerous it was to tailgate. Unfortunately the man carried that lesson to his grave, and Annie was arrested and charged with vehiculaqr manslaughter. Everyone who guessed got at least one part of the solution right, and the winner of the drawing this week was Shelly! Congratulations Shelly. Please choose a prize from the prize locker (there are some new ones this week!) and send me your mailing address.

Annie Blatt was on her way home from her weekly knitting group meeting. It was getting late am she really didn't care to drive at night - her 70 year-old eyes were not what they used to be. The truck behind her was tailgating her at a much too close distance for her comfort. The driver gave a long blast on his horn and closed the gap to mere inches of space between his front bumper and her rear bumper, hoping to intimidate the old woman into pulling over and letting him pass. Just as he lifted his hand to honk the horn again he saw a sudden flash of brake lights in front of him. He tried to veer around the car but that sent his truck soaring off the road at 50 miles per hour. It rolled over three times before coming to rest in a ditch off the side of the road. The driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Annie continued driving until Lt. Hugh Dunnit stopped her at a roadblock. Another driver had seen most of the accident and was able to identify Annie's Chevy Blazer. Lt. Dunnit asked her if she knew that an accident had occurred back when she slammed on her breaks. Annie looked up at Lt. Dunnit with a confused look on her face. "Oh, I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't know he was behind me. I saw an animal in the road, a little possum, and I had to stop and let it cross. I hope no one was hurt." Lt. Dunnit read her her rights and placed her under arrest for vehicular manslaughter. How did he know she was lying?

Finally, my Spring Swap is sent out

I finally sent off my Spring Swap today. Yes I know it is Summer now and that I am soooo late in sending it out. My apologies to Patty Ward. I am so sorry that it took me so long.
Just thought I'd share with you what is taking up all my attention this last month.
This is part of my front yard on the 8th of this month:
And this photo was taken yesterday evening at 8:19 pm. You can see the big difference.
I've spent the entire day today outside sitting on my porch listening to the water fall, talking to hubby and my daughter and then the last hour, knitting. It's fantastic.
We still have a few electrical things being worked on and next week a brick wall will be where the red and white vans are now along with some flowers and solar lights.
